About Us
Mill Mountain Theatre strives to inspire, entertain, enrich, educate and challenge audiences of Southwest Virginia through high-quality, professional theatrical productions and experiences. We are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of theatre artists and audiences through conservatory classes and programming aimed at education and community engagement; and are committed to ensuring the long term economic and artistic sustainability of the performing arts in the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia.
Mill Mountain Playhouse began in 1964, housed in an old resort on the highest geographic point in Roanoke. After the original Playhouse was destroyed by fire in 1976, the not-for-profit theatre company moved to the Grandin Theatre, a historic movie house in the heart of the Raleigh Court neighborhood. Mill Mountain Playhouse was so much an essential part of life in Roanoke that the theatre’s need for a permanent home became a priority when planning began to revive abandoned spaces downtown Roanoke. Center in the Square, a home to several of the city’s museums and arts agencies, opened in 1983 the playhouse, renamed Mill Mountain Theatre, became its anchor.
The company has always prided itself on its earned credentials as a professional, year-round theatre and its roots in community and artistic excellence. The theatre’s affiliation with regional and national associations and conferences ensures high standards and production values, making available the best of America’s actors to our local audiences.
